8 Reasons Why I Broke Up With Being A Therapist
1) The simple answer is that I’m not in it for the money. I’m in it for the client’s transformation and the relationship I co-create with them along the way.
2) When I was a therapist, my governing body liked to tell me how I could relate to my clients, and it was riddled with limitations. I saw that by the hour, as-needed sessions weren’t getting anyone out of their patterns.
3) What would happen is people would come see me for an hour when they were stressed or in crisis and then keep going back to repeating those same patterns that kept them creating the stress. It was a loop that didn’t ever end.
4) Great if you want money.
Not so great if you’re like me and genuinely want to see my clients radically transform their lives.
5) I vowed to come up with a way to truly help my clients shift, grow and integrate lasting change- I now, as a coach, provide in-the-moment support in between sessions.
6) 99.99% of my clients were highly independent, resilient daughters, but not always by choice. They were responsible and the ones their parents didn’t have to worry about - which means they often processed their big feelings alone in their room.
7) When I swoop in and invite my clients to share with me their spiralling thoughts, their racing overwhelms, and their emotions when they are “alone in their room,” suddenly they learn the power of co-regulation and unconditional loving support.
8) And yes, now that I am a coach, I can proudly say I love my clients, I can proudly share their transformations, and I can proudly brag about how amazing I think they are!
And I can proudly say how liberated I feel being able to serve and treat trauma in a way that is actually trauma-informed and safe!
When I was a therapist, there was an uncomfortable level of separation between me and my clients in my code of ethics. I was told that the client shouldn’t know much about me or my personal life, which I realized very quickly. When I shared personal stories with clients, something clicked for them, and they felt seen.
I am relationship-forward and holistic and believe in co-regulation. This does not fit the “system” of the traditional therapy world I was in.
I provide alternative, outside-of-the-box, in-depth support. I chat with my clients on social media, I run groups and dance with clients, I talk spirituality, astrology and Human Design with my clients…all things that were forbidden when I was a therapist.
I don’t believe in “mental” health in the traditional way.
You are so much more than your brain, and my focus is on everything being a symptom of a dysregulation of your nervous system. I don’t see a diagnosis, I see the trauma response.
I work with women who are breaking cycles, glass ceilings and barriers- so why would I limit myself?!
Coaching, with me, gets my clients to where they know, deep in the soul, they yearn to be. This isn’t fluff. This is a dedicated, committed partnership we jump into when I do 1:1 work.
